Elbow Strikes part 3 - Vertical Upward Elbow (instructional video included)

The vertical upward elbow strike is another great technique to use when you are in close quarters with an assailant. This technique is especially useful if the assailant grabs your arms to stop control you.

How to perform the vertical upward elbow strike:
  1. Begin in either a neutral stance or fighting stance, with both hands up and clenched fists.Raise one of your elbows directly upward and outward.

  2. Simultaneously, turn your same-side hip, and raise your heel of that foot in the direction of the strike. This allows you to put your whole body mass into the strike for more power.

  3. Return to the original position and repeat with the other arm (or continue with the same arm).

  4. From fighting stance be sure to strike with the rear elbow first, that will set you up to deliver an elbow with your lead side.

Below is a quick tutorial on how to perform this technique.
