Self Defense Tip: Beware of Flaunting Your Wealth

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

In today's digital age, the rise of social media has given way to a concerning trend: the flaunting of wealth and success. It might seem harmless, but lurking behind this display is the age-old sin of envy. The more we show off our wealth and success, the more we fuel resentment in others. There's a wise saying that captures this truth: "Everyone loves the winner, but secretly hopes for their downfall."

Now, you might wonder, how does this connect to self-defense?

This topic struck a chord with me after I watched a chilling documentary. It recounted the harrowing ordeal of a self-made millionaire who was subjected to weeks of torture until he signed away his fortune. They then tried to kill him. Miraculously, he survived the attempt on his life.

This documentary brought back memories of an acquaintance I had in New York. While not a millionaire, he certainly acted like one on social media by constantly showing off his wealth, and boasting about his affluence. Tragically, his flaunting attracted the attention of dangerous individuals who followed him home, robbing and ultimately taking his life.

What's truly terrifying about these crimes?

The worse part about these crimes was that both victims knew their assailants, and in both cases the victims had social media ties to their attackers. Even more disturbing was the complete lack of remorse displayed by these criminals when they were caught. To them, the victims deserved their fate for their flashy displays of wealth!

I understand the allure of showcasing your success, especially in the competitive realm of social media, where everyone acts like they have the perfect life. But I implore you, please resist the urge to flaunt your financial achievements. Every post, where you show off about how rich you are paints a target on yourself and your family.

Let's choose a different path—one of humility, of appreciating our successes without the need for public validation. By doing so, we not only protect ourselves but also contribute to a more compassionate and understanding society.
