Self Defense Tip Of The Week: What To Expect In A Real Fight

It happened! You tried talking your way out of the fight, but it didn't work and now he/she is attacking you. This is everyone's worse fear.

Firstly, your best course of action will be to run away because you don't know what is going to happen in the fight. Your life is literally on the line.

Unfortunately, you may not be able to run away (which is what happened to one of my students who was with his wife and kids when a drunk guy started a fight with him).

So, here are a few things to to know and expect when the fight is on:

  1. The assailant may test you first by getting in your face, and/or screaming obscenities at you, etc. If he/she senses your fear:

  2. The assailant will continue to test you by touching you, or pushing you around. If you don't respond:

  3. The assailant will begin to attack you. He attacks because his tests showed that you are scared and would not pose much of a threat, (conversely, if the assailant is enraged, or under the influence of alcohol/drugs, they may bypass the testing phase altogether and just attack you).

  4. He/she may attack with an explosive barrage of wild looping punches, or he /she may try to take you down to the ground and beat you up there. However they choose to attack, know that it will be very powerful, as the assailant is being fueled by their rage and adrenaline.

  5. Most untrained fighters have about 60 seconds of full-on aggression and adrenaline to attack you with. While this might not seem like a long time, it can feel like an eternity when you are the recipient of the attack. Remember, it just takes one strike to send you to the hospital.

  6. There are no rules in a street fight, anything goes. Punching, kicking, hair pulling, biting, etc. are all fair game.

  7. The fight usually ends when people come in and pull the fighters apart, or one person is unconscious.

Now that you know what to expect in a real fight. Make sure you train to be able to defeat that level of attack.
