Hi! My name is Lawrence Castanon.
I am the author of The Short Fight book, a self defense book specifically geared towards smaller, and weaker individuals.
Why write the book and create this training site?
This information is for anybody who has ever been assaulted, or victimized by a bigger, or stronger person. If you’ve ever “cowered in the corner,” be it physically or emotionally, I want you to have the confidence and the ability to stand up to the bigger or stronger person, whether it’s on the street or in the office.
This website and its corresponding book is designed to teach you simple, essential self-defense techniques, and to physically prepare you to defend yourself successfully.
My experience includes training in the martial arts with a focus on self-defense for over 40 years, as well as teaching for over 30 years. I have attained a 5th degree Black Belt in Karate, a 2nd degree Black Belt in Close Combat Martial Arts, am a certified Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu self-defense instructor, a Krav Maga self-defense instructor, a USA Wrestling Coach, and a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal fitness trainer.
From the early 1980s to the mid 1990s, I competed in Karate, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Boxing matches. Those were important experiences, but the ultimate tests came via numerous street fights (a short kid growing up in the rougher neighborhoods of the Bronx, NY, and Chicago, Ill, gets picked on a lot). Additionally, I competed in no holds barred matches where there were no weight classes, time limits, or rules.
At only 5 feet 2 inches tall, and weighing around 130 lbs. at the time, I had to learn techniques and develop strategies that would work for me, the “short guy.”
