Weight Gain Got You Stumped? Learn About This Hidden Culprit.

Have you been having trouble maintaining your weight, or are gaining weight, and don't know why?

A few years ago the same thing happened to me!

My weight started to increase, yet. I was working out the same (2X a day, plus training folks), and was still eating the same amount of calories as always.

Could it be the dreaded metabolism slowing down that everyone talks about when you get older?

No, that didn’t make sense, because I do cardio every day which helps increase metabolic rate.

I was stumped!

So, one day when entering food into my calorie tracker, a message popped up saying that the food was really high in sodium. Remembering from my nutrition courses that sodium makes you retain water weight. I decided to look into my food-log history, and too my shock I was ingesting 3,000 to 4,000 milligrams of sodium a day! That’s 2-3 times more than the recommended daily allowance!

But how could this be??? I don’t put salt on anything I eat!

The culprit was processed foods, It turns out that processed foods like breads, cheeses, processed meats (i.e. sandwich meats, bacon etc.), processes fish (i.e. cod, salmon lox etc.), and many canned/ boxed foods, including many Vegan Packaged Foods, are loaded with sodium!

Once I cut out these foods, I dropped the excess “water” weight within a couple of weeks.

Additionally, when researching sodium, I found there are a lot of diseases associated with a high sodium diet including:

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Heart Disease

  • Stroke

  • Kidney Disease

If you are having trouble losing weight but you’re doing everything right, check your sodium intake. It won't just help you drop a few pounds, it can also save your life!

Here are some great tips from the Cleveland Clinic on how to reduce your sodium intake including what foods to watch out for:https://health.clevelandclinic.org/know-salt-hiding-food/
