Stay Merry and Safe: Essential Holiday Safety Tips for When You're Out Shopping

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

Aah, it's the most wonderful time of the year, but while you're busy shopping for gifts and attending holiday parties, it's crucial to stay vigilant because criminals are out in full force, ready to steal your holiday cheer. The holiday season, although special, makes busy people vulnerable to theft and other holiday crimes. To ensure your safety during this festive time, I've put together some important holiday safety tips from various law enforcement and crime prevention groups, so you can get through the season securely:

When shopping:
  • Shop during daylight hours when possible. If night shopping is necessary, go with a friend or family member.

  • Dress casually and comfortably, avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

  • If possible, avoid carrying a purse or wallet. If you must, keep them in your front pocket.

  • Stay alert to your surroundings during the holiday rush.

  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; use checks or credit cards for purchases.

  • Don't overload yourself with packages; maintain clear visibility and freedom of motion.

  • Beware of strangers approaching you, especially those attempting to distract. Their intention may be to steal your money or belongings.

When driving:
  • Avoid driving alone or at night.

  • Keep your car doors locked and windows closed; use an alarm or anti-theft device.

  • Park in well-lighted areas, away from vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows.

  • Park close to your destination, and be mindful of your parking spot.

  • Never leave your car running or with children inside.

  • Secure your packages and valuables out of sight or in the trunk; do not leave them on car seats.

  • Stay aware of your surroundings when approaching or leaving your vehicle; ask for an escort if needed.

Using an ATM:
  • Choose ATMs near police stations, in malls, or well-lit locations. Withdraw only the necessary cash.

  • Shield your PIN while entering it, protecting it from anyone nearby.

  • Don't discard your ATM receipt at the ATM location.

If faced with a robbery attempt:
  • Do not resist; surrender your property—your life is irreplaceable.

  • Report the crime to the police immediately.

Self-defense measures are most effective when used preventively:

You can avoid a crime altogether using techniques like running away, hiding, screaming, and alerting others. These tactics can be lifesaving. Your safety is of utmost importance. Share these safety tips with family, friends, and neighbors to ensure everyone enjoys a safe holiday season.

Stay vigilant, and stay safe!
