Clinch Fighting 101 Series Begins Next Week!

Updated: Dec 2, 2023

What is clinch fighting?

Clinch fighting is a standing grappling style often seen in street fights. It happens when one opponent wants to get close for striking or when one opponent wants to stop the strikes of the other. Clinches can also occur when one or both opponents get tired, or to set up a takedown or throw an opponent.

If a smaller or weaker opponent is skilled in clinch fighting, they can effectively defend themselves against a larger or stronger assailant. This is because they stay within the larger person's striking range, enabling them to strike easily with minimal risk of getting hurt in return. This strategy also helps to keep the fight standing.

Unfortunately, many people don't know how to handle clinch fighting, leading to lots of fights ending up on the ground. This is a big problem for the smaller, weaker person, as they can easily be overpowered and taken down onto their back, with the bigger, stronger assailant on top striking them.

As a result, for the next few weeks our self defense techniques will focus on various clinches, and techniques the smaller/weaker person can use if they find themselves in the clinch position.
